Ghana LanguagesThe official language of Ghana is English. The Bureau of Ghana Languages operates in 11 additional languages: Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Ewe, Mfantse, Ga, Dangme and Nzema at the Headquarters in Accra and Dagbani, Dagaare, Gonja and Kasem at the Tamale branch office. The mission of the GBL is "is to provide services in Ghanaian languages to individuals, organizations, institutions and the general public."
For the traveler, Twi is probably the best language to learn as it is considered a lingua franca other than English. On a typical tour, the vast majority of the Ghanaians a tourist will meet will speak fluent English. A small percentage will speak English but prefer not to perhaps out of shyness, and an even smaller percentage may not speak English at all. Still, speaking to someone in their own language in their own country is a good way to connect with people and make new friends. |
