Afrodesia Night ClubAfrodesia is one of the most popular night clubs in Accra, and probably in Ghana. On Thursday - Saturday, expect to find it packed with people and the dance floor pulsing with strobe lights and bodies. Locals mix freely with tourists here, and it is a great place to get a real feel for nightlife in Accra.
Most people are dressed very well, in everything from expensive looking jeans to dress pants and cocktail style dresses with heels. Afrodesia is a semi upscale place, complete with lounge chairs, couches, and bathroom attendants.
The music is a mixture of banging hip hop, dance hall reggae, some pop music, and occasionally a bit of traditional and/or techno. Essentially, it's like any club in any major city in the States.
Drinks are very expensive - a Smirnoff Ice is 6 Ghana cedis, which is more than $6 US! You will be courted heavily by a friendly cocktail waitress who comes to you, so it is difficult to avoid drinking all together. The admission fee is GH¢ 10, so for you and a friend expect to spend at least GH¢ 32+. Clubbing at Accra's hottest spots isn't much cheaper than doing the same in the States.
One big difference between clubs in Accra and those in the States is that there are a good number of prostitutes in the crowd. These are not the prostitutes we instantly recognize on the street in the States; many of these ladies are very well dressed and good looking with the best makeup and hair. If you don't know any better, it can be hard to tell who is who.
A good rule of thumb is to avoid overly aggressive women. "Nice" Ghanaian women are typically reserved and do not approach men. Don't make any assumptions though - there are Ghanaian women who have lived in other places and become more outgoing, there are Americans who look like Ghanaians, and there are prostitutes who seem like "nice" girls. Just use a bit of common sense and stick with conversation. |
