Adinkra Stamping in NtonsoIn the Ashanti Craft Village of Ntonso, just a short drive north of Kumasi, Adinkra cloth is hand made. The bark of trees is mashed, boiled and reduced several times until it becomes a thick black dye. Wooden stamps in the shape of Adinkra symbols are then used to stamp designs on strips of fabric. The strips of fabric are then sewn together to make large pieces for clothing and decoration.
Adinkra fabric in black on black or red and black is typical worn to funerals, however in other colors it can be worn or used for different purposes.
There is a school near the place in Ntonso where the fabric is made - this is a good place to donate pens, pencils, notebooks and other school supplies. Adinkra Stamping in Ntonso PhotosClick thumbnails to enlarge. |
